Partnering To Scale
Entrepreneurship Education Across
Eastern Africa.

Get Involved

One of the philanthropic programmes of the Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropies is Wavumbuzi, a gamified, competency-based, and practice-oriented online Entrepreneurship Challenge for junior secondary and secondary/high school learners.

Launched in East Africa in 2019, it is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education and is rolled out throughout the country.

Through exposure to future-focused industries/sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Food & Beverage, Health, and Smart Cities, as well as real-world challenges, learners develop entrepreneurial mindsets, actions, aspirations, and competencies, including being values-driven, innovative problem-solving, opportunity recognition, resilience, and taking action and initiative.

In essence, Wavumbuzi equips young people to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom and beyond to become problem-solvers and value creators, acting like entrepreneurs from an early age.

To date, 538,329 girls and boys in junior secondary and senior secondary/ high schools in Kenya and Rwanda have registered for the Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge, of which 254,756 have participated with 186,574 going further into completing at least one Quest, submitting over 24 million entrepreneurial competency- and practice-based Challenges. With its growing impact – referred to as the Wavumbuzi Movement – by 2030, Wavumbuzi aims to have amplified its reach and supported one million young people to live meaningful lives. In the Wavumbuzi Movement, young people are reporting for instance improvements initially in academics and confidence to take action and initiatives in community projects, and after school they are setting up their businesses or social enterprises.

What Makes Wavumbuzi Different

Wavumbuzi bridges education policy and classroom practice by turning entrepreneurship education into real-world problem-solving. Through industry-themed, practice-based Challenges delivered as Quests, learners move beyond theory and become active problem-solvers who identify opportunities, create value, and apply entrepreneurial thinking to challenges in their communities.

Aligned with the regional and national education priorities.

Co-created with ecosystem partners to ensure real-world relevance.

Gamified to drive learner engagement, generating more than 10 million task submissions to date.

Built for Africa's Future:
Wavumbuzi prepares young people to become problem-solvers, value-creators, innovators, entrepreneurs, and job creators, helping build more resilient African economies.

Partnership with Government:
Wavumbuzi is implemented in partnership with the Ministries of Education and education stakeholders to ensure entrepreneurship education reaches learners at scale and aligns with national education priorities.

Embedded in Schools:
Unlike many entrepreneurship programmes that operate outside formal education, Wavumbuzi is integrated directly into secondary school learning and delivered in partnership with education systems.

Starts When It Matters Most:
Wavumbuzi works with learners whilst in secondary/high school, when aspirations, mindsets, confidence, and beliefs about what is possible are still being formed.

Entrepreneurship Through Practice:
Learners do not just learn about entrepreneurial competencies. They practise them by tackling real-world challenges, identifying opportunities, and creating solutions that add value to their communities.

Gamified Learning Experience:
Through an interactive online platform, learners engage in Quests and learn through action rather than theory alone whilst enhancing their digital skills.

Connects Learning to Livelihoods:
By linking classroom learning to real-world application, Wavumbuzi helps young people see pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and value creation.

Scalable Across Africa:
Wavumbuzi is designed to reach millions of learners across multiple countries, making problem solving and value-creation accessible at scale.

A Systems Change Approach:
Wavumbuzi is not a one-off competition. It aims to make entrepreneurship education a routine part of the secondary/high school experience, contributing to better preparing young people for the world of work as job creators and innovators.

The Wavumbuzi implementation model is also highly repeatable and scalable, providing an operational playbook that can be deployed across new markets in Eastern Africa.
