What Are Quests?

Quests are the heart of the Wavumbuzi Challenge. Each Quest introduces a real industry such as healthcare, agriculture, fintech, or creative arts through the story of a real African innovator. From there, you will complete a series of practical tasks that encourage entrepreneurial thinking.

Through quests you will:

Explore different industries with each edition and see how entrepreneurs operate in each one.

Complete practical tasks that develop real entrepreneurial skills.

Earn points and badges as progress is made.

Compete on a national leaderboard.

Develop entrepreneurial thinking that continues to grow beyond school.

Learning Mechanism

Practical and Applied

In Wavumbuzi, you engage with gamified Quests that reflect real-world problems and opportunities across diverse industries. Each challenge provides a practical experience, such as identifying a community problem or developing a business solution, helping entrepreneurial concepts become easier to understand through practice.

Gamified Competition

Wavumbuzi uses gamification to support both internal and external motivation and keep you engaged. The Challenge is structured as a digital competition: you register on a platform and complete challenges to earn points, badges, and rankings, with your progress displayed on individual and school leaderboards. This game-based approach creates a sense of competition, reward, and immediate feedback throughout your learning journey.

Top performers are celebrated weekly and at the Wavumbuzi Awards Ceremony at the end of each edition.

The Power of Story

Meet inspiring African innovators who turned ideas into impact. Every Quest begins with a real story that shows how entrepreneurs spot opportunities, overcome challenges, and create change.

Peer Review System

At the end of each Quest, you answer an open-ended question and review responses from your peers. Guided scoring and feedback help you recognise your strengths and improve over time.

Top Learners Mentorship

Top-performing learners gain access to the Wavumbuzi Top Mentorship Programme, which supports further personal and professional growth. Mentorship topics include growth mindset, personal leadership and goal setting, entrepreneurial competency development, and financial literacy.

All challenges in Wavumbuzi Headquarters must be completed first. After that, any Quest can be selected.

To complete a Quest, all challenge questions must be submitted. These may include multiple-choice, multi-select, and a final open-text question. Once a Quest has started, it must be completed before another Quest can be selected.

The Learner Leaderboard shows the top learners and schools and updates every 2 hours. Learners can access it by selecting the trophy icon at the bottom of the homepage. Teachers can access it through the Teacher Portal by going to Dashboard, then Leaderboard.

Weekly prizes are awarded to top Wavumbuzi learners. Winners are announced on the Wavumbuzi social media channels, and a Wavumbuzi Ambassador contacts them by email or phone to arrange prize delivery.

At the end of the Challenge, top learners, teachers, and schools receive overall awards during the Wavumbuzi National Awards Ceremony. Top learners are then invited to join the Wavumbuzi Top Learners Mentorship Programme

For a learner to count as fully engaged, you will need a minimum of 40 submissions

The Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge works as follows:

  • Quests: Quests: Each Quest is a set of structured, practical challenges set in a specific industry or sector, such as AI, mechatronics, or trade, to broaden learners’ knowledge
  • Pathways: Each Quest includes four Pathways, each built around a real entrepreneurship story.
  • Challenges: Each Pathway has six questions, including multiple-choice questions, where one correct answer is selected, and multi-select questions, where several correct answers are chosen.
  • The Final Pathway: The final Pathway in each Quest is an open-text business case, where learners apply what they have learned to develop a business idea. Submissions are peer reviewed, allowing learners to give and receive feedback.
  • Points: Each completed challenge earns points. Challenge formats include multiple-choice questions, multi-select questions, and open-text questions.

Learners can complete up to five peer reviews each day. This helps learners build new ideas by reviewing final challenge submissions from each Quest.

Clear review guidelines and guiding questions are provided to support fair and thoughtful evaluation of peer submissions.

Thoughtful, high-quality reviews earn points as follows:

  • 1st review: 20 points
  • 2nd review: 18 points
  • 3rd review: 16 points
  • 4th review: 14 points
  • 5th review: 12 points

Only high-quality reviews earn points. Careful reading and meaningful feedback help peers improve while strengthening each learner’s own learning journey.

The Learner Leaderboard gives an overview of the top learners and schools. The leaderboards update every 2 hours. Learners can access the leaderboard by clicking on the trophy at the bottom of the homepage.

Learners earn points for each submitted challenge, based on submission quality. After submitting a challenge, learners review and mark three peer submissions, earning additional points for accurate reviews. Points can also be earned through referrals, profile completion, and other platform activities. Each time points are earned, a notification appears in the Gameworld, and total points can be viewed in the learner profile.

Both the Baseline and Post Surveys are available on the Wavumbuzi Learner Portal, also known as the Gameworld.

  • Baseline Survey: Earn 300 points upon completion.
  • Post Survey: Earn 500 points upon completion.
  • Weekly Surveys: Earn 150 points for each completed survey.

All learners who participate in Wavumbuzi and earn a minimum of 2,000 points will receive a certificate at the end of the challenge. Certificates can be accessed and downloaded via the Learner Portal and will also be sent to learners’ emails for easy access when the system is closed. Teachers can also download learner certificates from the Teacher Portal and will receive a notification once they are available.
